Kalo Pothi – A Tale of two friends

Nepali movies are time and again testing the old held belief about the Nepali cinemas that they are not worth seeing. Just recently Pashupati Prasad changed the perception about Nepali movies and now Min Bahadur Bham’s internationally acclaimed movie , ‘Kalo Pothi’ is continuing that legacy  and has broken the traditional boundary of Nepali cinema.

Before the release of the movie in Nepal, there was  a huge hype about the movie about its accolades in the international film festivals. After watching this movie I can testify that the movie has lived upto its image.

A movie whirls around the friendship between two friends, Prakash and Kiran with the backdrop of the Far Western Nepal’s language, culture and tradition and the horror of 10 year long insurgency.  A classic tale of two friends, the main protagonists, on their course of their story speaks volumes of the life and people of Nepal that live far from the modernity with the entrenched traditional beliefs. The painful episode in the story is the reminder about the history that we seem to have forgotten or taken for granted, the 10 year long horror of the Maoist insurgency.  It takes back to the days of Sankatkaal and at some point brings about the eerie remembrance from our collective repressed memories about the fears that we had at that time.

Kalopothi has proven that you don’t need many characters and complex intricate setting to make a film but a single thread of story can weave a wonderful movie.  The quest of two friends have been demonstrated and presented with directorial ingenuity with each scene and shot of the movie seem to be speaking powerful cinematic language.

Kalopothi has proven that the story so simple can be such a wonderful movie. It’s the must watch  (as per my opinion) and if you miss it well you will miss the movie of a lifetime. Go and watch it without any shred of doubt.
