My adventures with Sherlock Holmes

It was 9 years back when  I was in class five, there was a story titled “The Adventure of the Solitary Cyclist” in our English course book. As I immersed into the story, my mind used to take a leap out of curiosity. But after some time, I had to be deeply disappointed as the story was left incomplete . Then my  impatience knew no bound.  My 12 year mind was unaware of what was Sherlock Holmes and only took that story some random story by a random writer. At that time, internet was alien to me let alone google.  The only option was library. For weeks I had looked into every possible books in the library to find the missing portion of my incomplete story. But in the midst of my search I caught up the word “Sherlock Holmes” in one of the book. And then suddenly it reminded me of the shadowy and illustrious character of my most searched story. With the tinge of curiosity and surprise I poured my self into the story. It was the story of red headed men. From then, I have been the crazy fan of Sherlock Holmes. Up till date, I can proudly say that I have read all the series of Sherlock Holmes not once  but by innumerous times and even I find it as thrilling as the first time when I go through all the stories again. Sherlock Holmes has been my inspirer and my role model and no doubt it will continue to be in the future.

Sherlock Holmes paved the way for me into the world of fiction and novels. I began to romance with the books which even had irritated my parents for my whole pocket money used to finance my craze for books and I read less my course books as most of the time they’d find me with “extra” books ( that’s what they called for the books out of the curriculum J). Reading became my hobby and till today the hobby hasn’t slackened but more intensified.

I can’t tell exactly why I became so much glued with Sherlock Holmes. But I believe it has got to do with his Bohemian personality and his three factors i.e. Knowledge, Observation and Deduction , which he was very thorough, accurate and precise with them. After reading Sherlock Holmes the tipsy effect of the stories would make me somewhat Sherlock Holmes of my own ( Atleast I thought that and somewhat tried to pursue his methodology with failure J). I wanted to be Sherlock Holmes. I did not care the fact he was just a fictional detective. For me he was a hero and still he is. Sherlock Holmes has a very profound effect upon me and my life.

The writer Sir Arthur Conan Doyle for me didn’t matter much as his own character, Sherlock Holmes. I took Sherlock Holmes as a alive person rather than a fiction. Sherlock Holmes gave me a reason to find passion and I started hunting for it. I searched for the medium to apply his three factors . And somehow I got struck and fascinated towards psychology. I found it as a perfect avenue for these three factors to be applied and moreover psychology deals with human behavior. I hit on the right chord and all variants of violin (S.Holmes has is ardent violin player of his own tunes ) music has filled in my life.  With this decision, infact the turning point of my life, upon  which I have decided to test my fate. Always a very good student (m not boasting) when chose Humanites after SLC brought a great tension in my relationship with my parents as I had shattered their dreams of making me a doctor. But I didn’t quiver because Sherlock Holmes with me.  I wanted to study Psychology so I chose Humanities. The reason was simple as that.  And now currently I am in the distant land pursuing my degree in Psychology. The tiny rope of my life has now stretched to embroider my life.

I still remember the day when we chatted a whole night. I didn’t know the person well. It was a casual chat but then the topic of Sherlock Holmes sprang from the other side and that topic was an offshoot to our night long chat. That person now has become a special person and the very best friend of my life. Thanks to Sherlock Holmes.

I am not the only one who is in love with S. Holmes. There are plethora of people in the world who are crazy about Sherlock Holmes . Sherlock Holmes series  is still one of the most sought and bought books in the world. The British Government has named the London street as “221B Baker Street”, the resident of Sherlock Holmes.  There’s a global club of Sherlock Holmes fans who meet once a year and organize a trip to the famous locations that are mentioned in the books. The legacy of Sherlock Holmes is enormous. Sherlock Holmes is a global sensation.  The modern expansion of the character , Sherlock Holmes, is going on. Of the latest I have been fond of two Hollywood blockbuster “Sherlock Holmes” movies played by Robert Downey Jr. and British telly series “Sherlock” which is now in the third series. Anything related with Sherlock Holmes or just the name Sherlock Holmes is a great stimulant to my senses. My adventure with Sherlock Holmes so far has been a life changer and “elementary” (the exclamation when Holmes gets excited ). It doesn’t just end here cause the game is still on!!
